The power-law tail exponent of income distributions
In this paper we tackle the problem of estimating the power-law tail exponent of income distributions by using the Hill’s estimator. A subsample semi-parametric bootstrap procedure minimizing the mean squared error is used to choose the power-law cutoff value optimally. This technique is applied to personal income data for Australia and Italy. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
متن کاملPower-law tail distributions and nonergodicity.
We establish an explicit correspondence between ergodicity breaking in a system described by power-law tail distributions and the divergence of the moments of these distributions.
متن کاملInfluence of saving propensity on the power-law tail of the wealth distribution
Some general features of statistical multi-agent economic models are reviewed, with particular attention to the dependence of the equilibrium wealth distribution on the agents’ saving propensities. It is shown that in a finite system of agents with a continuous saving propensity distribution a power-law tail with Pareto exponent a 1⁄4 1 can appear also when agents do not have saving propensitie...
متن کاملEvidence for power-law tail of the wealth distribution in India
The higher-end tail of the wealth distribution in India is studied using recently published lists of the wealth of richest Indians between the years 2002-4. The resulting rank distribution seems to imply a power-law tail for the wealth distribution, with a Pareto exponent between 0.81 and 0.92 (depending on the year under analysis). This provides a comparison with previous studies of wealth dis...
متن کاملA power law tail in India’s wealth distribution: Evidence from survey data
This study uses survey data from India to examine the top percentile of the wealth distribution in India. Using nationally representative samples from two years, 1991 and 2002, a power law tail is found with a Pareto exponent ranging between 1.8 and 2.4. The tail is examined for three specific groupings: households in the rural areas, households in the urban areas and all households. The distri...
